Turn Off Account Numbers

(You can always restore them if your accountant wants.)

Account numbers can be useful for keeping your data entry consistent. However, often when account numbers are turned on in QuickBooks, some account names on the Chart of Accounts will have an account number, and some account names will not. This makes your Chart of Accounts messy and difficult to read. You want your accounts neat, efficient, and orderly.

Instead of trying to remember confusing numbers, it’s easier to find accounts by name.

Procedure:

1) Click on "Edit" on the menu bar.

2) Click on "Preferences" in the drop-down list.

3) Once in "Preferences", select "Accounting".

4) Click on the "Company Preferences" tab.

5) Then uncheck "Use account numbers".

6) Click "OK".

By turning off the account numbers you can consistently think alphabetically to find accounts on the Chart of Accounts or to enter data in transactions.
